Day 2 of the 2021 Rogue Invitational kicked off with event three ‘Echo Burner’ consisting of: 20 Thrusters (115/75), 40/32 Cal Echo Bike followed by another 20 Thrusters at the same weight. American Jason Hopper took the event win for the men with a time of 2:33.42.
“To cope with the pain, I was just telling myself what’s going to hurt more losing or this pain” said the athlete who progressed up the standings to second place with the 100 points he gained.
On the Women’s side of proceedings, 17-year-old Emma Carey set a fast pace in event 2 before struggling to maintain said pace the second set of thrusters. This allowed a number of veterans of the sport to close the gap and overtake the youngster, none of which did so faster than Amanda Barnhart who produced an event winning time of 2:43.27.
Event 4 of the weekend was a pinnacle point in Justin Medeiros cementing his position at the top of the standings. His first winning time of the competition of 9:53.68 in ‘Concept 2’ was enough to hold of challenges from Pat Vellner and Chandler Smith and extend his lead over the former in the overall standing.
Following event 4, which consisted of 4 rounds of 21 Cal Ski erg, 21 Med Ball GHD Sit-ups (14/10) and 1 Hill run, Medeiros commented “Going into this workout we thought it was going to be heavy on the Ski erg and run and after watching the previous hear it was like ok the GHDs are actually a big factor”.
The same event also proved a challenge for Tia-Clair Toomey, who while victorious in her heat could not beat the score of Crossfit Mayhem athlete Hayley Adams who posted a score of 11:01.25 in heat 1 to take the event win away from the 2-time defending champion.
To conclude proceedings on day 2, we returned to an event seen before at the 2019 rendition of the Rogue invitational that conveniently happened to be won by the same two athletes. The ‘Mule’ 21-15-9 sets of Deadlift (315/225) and Burpee pull-ups was once again won by Annie Thorisdottir and Patrick Vellner with times of 5:33.17 and 4:45:37 respectively. The former established distance between herself and the rest of the field through a fast pace during the longer sets of deadlifts while Vellner once again found himself in a tight battle for the lead with Justin Medeiros.
Following her second event win of the weekend, Thorisdottir said “When the first lift went unbroken, I just this is where I should breakup in the 15 but it was definitely the correct strategy, I felt great throughout”
With event finishes on day two of 3rd, 4th, and 1st, Thorisdottir has propelled herself to the top of the leader board with a 15-point lead over Tia-Clair Toomey who currently has 430 points. Justin Medeiros finds himself in a far more comfortable position on the men’s side. His consistent scores of 2nd, 1st and 2nd on day 2 have helped him to a 35-point lead over pat Vellner with at least 2 events left on the final day.
